Meet Ange – Our New Trainer
Meet Ange…
If you had read my previous blog you’ll know I’m away on holiday for 6 weeks. To the UK, just saying. And, things had got really busy and I couldn’t juggle everything so I’ve invited in Angela Newell to help out with the training aspect of Say It Clearly. Ange has had a huge amount of experience in many areas including training people who speak English as another language. It has been just fantastic having her on board these last few months and so I’d like to introduce her to you properly – (look at those letters!! Super impressive)

I have been fortunate to experience a lifetime of teaching, directing, theatre-making, acting, dramaturgy and public speaking.
Once qualified with a BA, PG Dip (Arts) and Teacher’s Diploma, I began teaching in high school, at James Hargest College, in 1991, teaching Years 9-13. My major subjects were English and Drama, with minors in French.
This continued until 2001 when I moved to Venture Southland, taking up a 19-year stint as arts manager, directing events such as the Southland Arts Festival and Shakespeare in the Park. I established and managed events and supported the arts sector on behalf of the Southland councils.
Having learnt Speech and Drama throughout school, I acquired an LTCL (Licentiate, Trinity College London) diploma in 1989. I have taught Speech and Drama on and off over the decades. Students have ranged from young children to adults seeking qualifications in public speaking or performance.
I have also directed around 18 ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ productions and other local theatre productions and have performed in many local shows, including a solo show.
I have taught five programmes of the Certificate in Professional Speaking for Migrants (through English Language Partners), a programme developed by Speech NZ to assist migrants improve their oral communication and public speaking skills.
I have a number of governance roles: elected board member and deputy chair of ILT (Invercargill Licensing Trust); board member of the Enrich @ ILT, Invercargill’s school for gifted and talented children; deputy chair of Arts Murihiku, Southland’s arts development trust; and founding trustee of Shakespeare in the Park Charitable Trust, since 2001.
I have high standards in written and spoken English and am a passionate advocate for correct pronunciation, grammar and spelling. However, I also love our unique NZ language and accent.
