This turned out to be more of a self-affirming blog actually. Didn’t start out that way but there you go…

Recently I’ve had a few inquiries from organisations that employ people who speak English as another language whose spoken English is really holding them back in their job. One in particular is in sales and it’s come to the point that his job is potentially on the line if he doesn’t improve his speech so people can understand him. The crucial factor in this case is speed. As in, he speaks so quickly no one knows what he’s talking about and this is massively hindering his prospects, and his ability to perform in his job. Worrying.

Can I help? Yes, 100% and it’s not by telling him he has to slow down as this is pointless, quite probably because the majority of people don’t actually know how to slow down. By teaching him a variety of techniques, including diaphragmatic breathing, he will learn how to slow down and speak with more clarity.

BUT (and the capitals are important), he has to put the work in to learn how to slow down.

In other cases it’s not only speaking too quickly but also too quietly or mumbling. Again, there are exercises and techniques to improve this aspect which I demonstrate to the client and they are to spend the week doing those exercises daily until we meet next, usually in a week.

There are also videos of me explaining the techniques and demonstrating the exercises which the client can access between meetings. As well as plenty of written materials to support the learning.

I find the approach of videos to watch, materials to read and exercises to do is a really holistic way to learn and it is more likely for this learning to stay embedded in their minds as they go about their work. There is proof of this with successful clients leaving fabulous testimonials (that you can read on my website), people referring me on and repeat business. So after 10 years of doing this, I do feel as if I have a successful model. Yay me.

I commend those employers who recognise when and where their employees need some work then actually do something about it and are willing to invest in their employees. It would be my opinion that offering ongoing professional learning is essential, not a bonus, since this is what I do, and the reason I do it is that I wholeheartedly believe good communication and clear speech are the baselines for any person and business.

If you would like more info about any of my courses or training just send me an email.

Have a good week, Miriam.
